Rajasthan Bans Suspicious Bupivacaine Batch, Issues Statewide Health Alert

Authorities have outright banned batch number BKBP02601, manufactured by Themis company. This decisive action underscores a commitment to patient safety in the face of potential risks.

Drug Controller Ajay Phatak confirmed that an estimated 14,000 injections from the suspect batch had been distributed to various districts. These include key areas like Hanumangarh, Bharatpur, Sriganganagar, Karauli, Kota, Tonk, and Jaipur.

During a recent inspection at the company's supply hub, officials managed to secure 7,000 injections. The remaining stock had already made its way into the distribution network.

Currently, around 8,500 injections have been effectively blocked from use. A further 1,500 have been dispatched for rigorous testing, while a significant recall operation is underway for 3,000 to 4,000 units still in circulation.

Precautionary Measure After Hyderabad Incidents

While no adverse drug reactions linked to this batch have been reported within Rajasthan so far, Mr. Phatak stressed that monitoring has been significantly ramped up. This proactive approach is a direct response to worrying reports from Hyderabad.

Patients in Hyderabad reportedly experienced severe reactions after receiving injections from the very same batch. This prompted a national advisory and central communication, leading to Rajasthan's immediate response.

The department has issued clear directives to field officers. Their mandate is to closely track the usage of Bupivacaine and ensure the complete withdrawal of the suspicious batch. This serves as a vital precautionary measure to safeguard public health.
