Why the Change? Preventing Board Conflicts
Minister Kharra explained that the previous system of direct elections for chairpersons often led to friction. He noted instances where chairpersons and councillors belonged to different political ideologies.
This ideological divide, according to Kharra, resulted in prolonged tussles within the boards, ultimately impacting development work for a full five-year term. The new approach aims to ensure smoother operations and foster a unified vision for urban development.
“For the efficient functioning and development of any urban body, it’s crucial that the board and its head share a common vision and ideology,” the UDH Minister stated. He believes differing political viewpoints hinder decision-making and stall public welfare projects.
OBC Report and Cabinet Decision Delaying Elections
Addressing the ongoing delay in local body and Panchayati Raj elections, Minister Kharra pointed fingers at the previous Congress government. He mentioned that in 2021-22, the Supreme Court had directed the completion of a 'triple test' for OBC reservation, but no concrete steps were taken.
Following the formation of the BJP government, an OBC commission was constituted. This commission, with administrative support, began collecting necessary data. Processes like SIR (Social Impact Assessment Report) and census work caused some further delays.
The good news is that the OBC commission submitted its report to Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on August 5th. This crucial report is now slated for discussion during the state cabinet meeting on August 7th. Only after this meeting will the future course of action for the elections be decided.
BJP's Clear Message: Loyalty First for Tickets
During the Sikar meeting, BJP State General Secretary Shravan Singh Bagdi and Divisional In-charge for Local Body Elections Shankar Singh Rajpurohit delivered a firm message to party workers. They emphasized that tickets for the upcoming local body elections would only be granted to dedicated party members.
They reiterated that within the BJP, the organization holds greater importance than any individual post, with workers being the party's ultimate strength. From the national president down to the 'Panna Pramukh' (booth-level in-charge), everyone is considered a worker.
'Lotus Flower' as the Sole Candidate
BJP leaders urged officials and workers present at the organizational meeting to set aside individual aspirations. They called for campaigning with the 'Lotus Flower' (BJP's election symbol) as the sole candidate.
