Jodhpur Hospital Mishap: Patient Receives Wrong Blood Transfusion, Kidney Damaged

Patient's Condition Worsens, Referred to MGH

Following the transfusion, Bhil's condition worsened, necessitating her transfer to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital (MGH). There, she developed kidney complications and required dialysis. Hospital authorities have stated that she is currently out of danger.

Confusion Over Patient Identity Suspected

According to hospital superintendent Dr. Mohan Makwana, a departmental doctor has confirmed in writing that the issue arose due to the incorrect blood transfusion. Bhil, a resident of Davra Bavdi in Jodhpur district, was admitted to Umaid Hospital after a normal delivery due to anemia and other reasons. She was placed in the labour room where another patient named Dhapu was also admitted. Crucially, both patients shared the same husband's name. This similarity is believed to be the root cause of the mix-up, leading to Bhil being administered B positive blood on the second day, after initially receiving O positive blood.

Doctors Alerted to the Error

The incident came to light when Bhil's health declined sharply, with her urine output ceasing, causing alarm among the gynecology department doctors. She was referred to MGH on July 13. Reports suggest that the gynecology doctor in the labour room had formally alerted the superintendent in writing about the nurses' alleged lack of attention, which may have contributed to the error.

Investigation Underway, Action Promised

In response to the serious lapse, Umaid Hospital administration has formed a committee comprising doctors and nursing officials to investigate the matter. This committee is expected to submit its report within three to four days. Dr. B.S. Jodha, Principal of S.N. Medical College, assured that action would be taken against those found guilty once the investigation report is finalized.

Past Incidents Raise Concerns Over Patient Safety

This incident is not an isolated one in Jodhpur. Previously, the district hospital witnessed a critical situation where eight postpartum mothers' health deteriorated significantly after delivery. Two of these patients had their kidneys affected and were referred to AIIMS. While all of them eventually recovered and were discharged, the current event highlights a persistent issue with adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) despite previous warnings and directives.
