Jaipur's Water Future in Question: Monsoon Revival Offers Hope, But Dam Levels Remain a Concern

However, amidst this renewed hope, a significant concern looms. Jaipur City's Chief Engineer for PHED, Ajay Singh Rathore, recently highlighted that the Bisalpur Dam currently holds sufficient water only until July of next year. He warned that if the monsoon doesn't deliver adequate rainfall, leading to insufficient water inflow into the dam, the city might face water supply cuts in the future.

Rising Demand Meets Uncertain Supply

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Chief Engineer Rathore elaborated on the city's growing water demands. "Jaipur, the capital city, alone accounts for 6 lakh water connections, all directly supplied by the Bisalpur Dam," he stated. The number of connections is steadily increasing, with projections suggesting it could reach around 6.5 lakh by December. Currently, Jaipur city draws 630 MLD (Million Liters per Day) of water from the Bisalpur Dam.

Rathore acknowledged the monsoon's initial weak phase but emphasized that about a month and a half of the monsoon season still remains. "We are hopeful for a good monsoon, and if the Bisalpur Dam's catchment area receives substantial rainfall, the dam's water level will surely increase," he added. If the dam reaches a level of 313 or 314 RL (Reduced Level) due to good rains, Jaipur city could potentially receive water supply until July 2028. Conversely, a weaker monsoon could force the department to consider water supply cuts as early as November to January of this year.

Bridging Gaps with Tanker Services

Addressing immediate needs, Chief Engineer Ajay Singh Rathore confirmed that water is being supplied via tankers to the outer areas of Jaipur where household water connections are yet to be established. He also mentioned that in areas where water tanks are ready, the department is preparing to commence piped water supply soon.
