According to the notice issued by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC on July 14, 2026, a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats are now available. These seats are spread across 823 medical colleges throughout the country, marking a significant expansion in medical education infrastructure.
Nearly 10,000 New Seats Added
The latest matrix reveals an impressive addition of 9,911 new MBBS seats this year. This brings the total count to 1,36,939, with 1,27,028 seats being renewed from existing capacities. The newly increased seats are a game-changer for many candidates eyeing a career in medicine.
A closer look shows that 2,400 of these new seats come from 25 newly established medical colleges. This includes 400 seats distributed across seven new government medical colleges and a substantial 2,000 seats from 18 new private medical institutions, reflecting growth in both public and private sectors.
State-Wise Distribution and College Landscape
The breakdown between government and private institutions offers further clarity. Government medical colleges now total 441, collectively offering 63,296 seats. Of these, 61,185 are renewed, and 2,111 are newly increased.
Private medical colleges account for 382 institutions with a larger share of 73,643 total seats. This figure includes 65,843 renewed seats and a significant 7,800 newly increased seats, showcasing a robust expansion in the private sector.
Among states, Karnataka leads the pack with 75 colleges and 15,395 total MBBS seats. Following closely are Tamil Nadu with 78 colleges offering 13,999 seats, and Uttar Pradesh with 88 colleges providing 14,000 seats. Maharashtra features 86 colleges with 13,099 seats, while Telangana has 66 colleges and 10,250 seats, highlighting key hubs for medical education.
Compliance and Oversight for New Additions
The MARB has laid down clear directives for private medical colleges that have received approval for new institutions or an increase in intake capacity. These colleges are mandated to furnish the necessary Electronic Bank Guarantee (E-Bank Guarantee) to the Director, MARB, within seven days from the public notice's issuance date.
Crucially, the Letter of Permission (LoP) will only be issued once the E-Bank Guarantee is received and verified. This step ensures financial compliance and accountability from institutions expanding their intake.
The NMC also clarified that the released seat matrix is not set in stone; it remains subject to revision based on decisions from the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority. Any such revisions will be promptly uploaded on the official NMC website for the benefit of counselling committees at both central and state levels.
Counselling committees have been strictly warned against permitting admissions exceeding the approved and notified seat numbers. Any discrepancies or deviations are to be immediately referred to MARB for clarification, reinforcing the commission's commitment to a transparent and regulated admission process.
