CBSE Mandates Third Language Pass for 10th Certificate from 2026-27 Session

This new directive means that a student's performance in a third language will directly impact their eligibility for the final pass certificate. Currently, students typically study two languages up to Class 10.

Understanding the New Mandate

Under the upcoming rule, students will be required to study and pass a third language from Class 6th to 8th. Crucially, if a student fails in this third language examination, they will not be issued the Class 10th pass certificate.

The marks obtained in this third language will be factored into the final certificate. Should a student not clear the third language, they will be given the opportunity to reappear for the examination.

Aligning with National Education Policy 2020

Sources indicate that this decision aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The NEP 2020 strongly emphasizes the promotion of multilingualism and the strengthening of Indian languages across the curriculum.
