Rajasthan High Court Grills Government Over Unfulfilled MSP Crop Procurement

An acting bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice SP Sharma and Justice Manish Sharma, issued these directives. The court has also ordered that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and RAJFED be made parties to the ongoing case.

Central Government's Delayed Response Under Scrutiny

The court highlighted that notices were initially issued to the central government back in 2019 regarding this very issue. However, no response has been received to date. The bench has now granted the Assistant Solicitor General a final opportunity to submit a reply.

Rampal Jat, in his petition, has sought specific instructions from the court to commence the procurement of crops at MSP. He also urged the implementation of the Warehousing Development and Regulation Act, 2007, and the rules framed under it in 2010.

Farmers Facing Losses Since 2012

The petition detailed significant losses faced by farmers in the state, particularly citing the lack of millet procurement since 2012. It also pointed to damages incurred for other essential crops like maize, moong, and gram due to the absence of MSP purchases.

Previously, in 2019, the High Court had requested both the central and state governments to provide suggestions on the best policy and implementation for MSP procurement. Despite this, the central government continues to seek more time to file its response.

The division bench is scheduled to hear the matter again on July 30.
