CBSE Introduces New Language Requirement for 10th Pass Certificate

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to implement a significant change regarding its Class 10th pass certificate. From the academic session 2026-27, students will need to mandatorily pass a third language to receive their Class 10th certificate.

This new directive means that a student's performance in a third language will directly impact their eligibility for the final pass certificate. Currently, students typically study two languages up to Class 10.

Understanding the New Mandate

Under the upcoming rule, students will be required to study and pass a third language from Class 6th to 8th. Crucially, if a student fails in this third language examination, they will not be issued the Class 10th pass certificate.

The marks obtained in this third language will be factored into the final certificate. Should a student not clear the third language, they will be given the opportunity to reappear for the examination.

Aligning with National Education Policy 2020

Sources indicate that this decision aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The NEP 2020 strongly emphasizes the promotion of multilingualism and the strengthening of Indian languages across the curriculum.

By making a third language mandatory, CBSE aims to enhance students' linguistic foundations and expose them to a broader range of languages. This policy will also extend to students studying in CBSE-affiliated schools outside India, ensuring a uniform approach.

The move is expected to prepare students better for a linguistically diverse world, fostering a deeper appreciation for various languages and cultures. Schools will need to adapt their curriculum and assessment strategies to integrate this new requirement effectively.
