Many people speculated that the robot's software had failed and it had gone out of control. Meanwhile, some users expressed concern that increasingly advanced humanoid robots could become a major threat to humans in the future. Researchers at Penn State University have found a way to convert waste plastic bottles into high-quality synthetic graphite, a material that plays a crucial role in lithium-ion batteries. The breakthrough could not only reduce plastic waste but also make battery production cleaner and more sustainable. Turning plastic waste into battery material In the study, scientists used polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the plastic commonly used to make water and soft drink bottles, and transformed it into synthetic graphite, a highly organised crystalline form of carbon. The graphite produced from PET had a more ordered crystal structure than commercially available natural graphite. According to the researchers, this makes it a promising material for use in battery anodes, the part of a lithium-ion battery that stores and releases electrical energy. The findings were published in the journal Diamond and Related Materials. Why is graphite so important? Graphite is one of the most important materials used in lithium-ion batteries, which power electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, and large renewable energy storage systems. As the demand for EVs and clean energy grows, so does the demand for battery-grade graphite. The U.S. Department of Energy even classifies graphite as a critical mineral because of its importance in modern technology. This discovery could provide an alternative source of graphite while reducing dependence on mining natural graphite. Giving plastic bottles a second life Although PET is one of the world's most widely used plastics, a large amount still ends up in landfills or is recycled into lower-value products. They mixed shredded PET plastic with a small amount of graphene oxide and heated it under carefully controlled conditions. According to the government, AI is improving rapidly, but it still leaves behind small clues that can help you tell whether an image is real or fake. To help you separate fact from fiction, we've put together a simple guide explaining how to check whether a news story, photo, video or online content is real or AI-generated, so you don't unintentionally spread misinformation. Part A: How to identify an AI-generated image 1. Look closely at hands, faces, and small details The easiest way to spot an AI-generated image is by checking the small details. Along with this, the government has given strict instructions to Meta that this feature should not be rolled out (launched) in India until the entire process of discussion and consultation on this matter is completed. What is WhatsApp's Username Feature? WhatsApp, a platform owned by Meta, recently announced a new username feature. With the help of this feature, users will be able to communicate with others without sharing their phone numbers. It will act as an optional unique identifier for users. This username will always start with the '@' symbol, for example, @Name123. Using this, other people will be able to message or call you, and your phone number will remain completely private. This username will be different from the display name visible on your profile. Display names can be similar, but usernames will be absolutely unique for each account. Imagine a future where sound, instead of light, powers communication systems, helps doctors detect diseases with greater accuracy, and enables highly sensitive sensors. That future may have just moved a little closer. Scientists have developed a new quantum device that can produce precisely controlled ‘sound particles’ known as ‘phonons’ by pushing electrons through an ultra-thin crystal at temperatures just above absolute zero. The study was carried out by researchers at McGill University in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada, while the special material used to build the device was developed at Princeton University. What are phonons and why are they important? Phonons are tiny packets of energy that represent vibrations travelling through a material. In simple words, they are the quantum version of sound waves. Although we cannot hear them, phonons play a major role in how heat and energy move through materials. Scientists believe that if they can control phonons as precisely as they control light particles (photons), they could build an entirely new generation of advanced technologies. This is where the idea of a phonon laser comes in. Just as a regular laser emits highly controlled light, a phonon laser would generate extremely precise sound waves. How does the new quantum device work? The researchers built the device using a crystal that is only a few atoms thick. This ultra-thin material acts as a tiny pathway through which electrons can travel. When an electric current pushes the electrons through this narrow channel at extremely high speeds, the electrons release extra energy. Instead of emitting light, they produce controlled bursts of sound-like vibrations called phonons. The researchers cooled the device to between 10 millikelvin and 3.9 Kelvin, which is only a tiny fraction above absolute zero (-273.15°C). At such incredibly low temperatures, almost all thermal activity disappears. Electrons become much more organised, allowing scientists to observe delicate quantum effects that would normally remain hidden. The extreme cold also reduces unwanted noise, making it easier to generate and control phonons with remarkable precision. Researchers observed behaviour that existing theories cannot fully explain Current scientific theories predict that sound-like vibrations should only appear under certain conditions. However, the new device produced phonons even after the electrons were pushed far beyond those predicted limits. This suggests that scientists may need to rethink some existing ideas about how energy moves through advanced quantum materials. Explaining the discovery, Michael Hilke, Associate Professor of Physics at McGill University and co-author of the study, said: Modern communication is largely based on light, including electromagnetic waves and electrical currents. In a medium such as water, sound can travel, whereas light and electrical currents cannot. In the human body, sound waves can also be a useful tool. How could this technology improve communication? Today's communication systems mainly rely on light, radio waves, and electrical signals. However, these methods do not work equally well in every environment. For example, sound travels much more effectively underwater than light or electrical signals. If scientists can successfully develop phonon-based technologies, future communication systems could become faster, more reliable, and better suited for challenging environments. Building new data centers takes years, but Google needs computing power right now. To solve this, Google turned to SpaceX. The rocket manufacturing company recently joined forces with Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, which built a massive supercomputer center called 'Colossus' in Memphis, Tennessee, America. Google is renting about 1,10,000 high-tech Nvidia computer chips, memory, and processors inside SpaceX's facility. In other words, Google is taking help from SpaceX to keep Gemini running fast until it can build its own data centers. What are GPUs? GPU is like a super-fast team of thousands of workers, while a regular computer chip (the CPU) is like one genius scientist. What do we use GPUs for? GPUs can do thousands of tiny math problems at the exact same second. AI programs like ChatGPT or Google Gemini have to look at billions of words and pictures at the same time to learn. Regular computers are too slow for this. GPUs are perfect for AI because they can process mountains of information all at once. Right now, every big tech company (like Google, Microsoft, and Meta) is trying to build the smartest AI. Because these cannot build AI without thousands of these chips, GPUs have become the most valuable and wanted pieces of technology in the world. Which other companies pay rent to SpaceX? The research was led by geneticist Dieter Egli, who said the findings should encourage public discussion about the benefits and risks of altering human embryo DNA. "We can provide the scientific data, but society must decide how such technology should be used," he said. New gene-editing method more efficient for DNA modification The researchers used a newer technique known as base editing. Unlike traditional CRISPR gene editing, which cuts DNA strands, base editing makes small, precise changes to individual genetic letters. According to the team, this method avoided the extensive DNA damage often seen with earlier gene-editing techniques. However, Dr Egli stressed that many questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding possible side effects. He said the technology is not ready for clinical use. The study has been published online and is currently being reviewed for publication in a scientific journal. Gene editing has been debated for more than a decade The debate over editing human embryos began after the development of CRISPR technology in 2012. CRISPR allowed scientists to target and alter specific parts of DNA quickly and cheaply. It soon became a widely used research tool and led to efforts to develop treatments for inherited diseases. He later claimed the experiment resulted in three healthy children, but independent experts have never verified their condition. In 2020, Dr Egli's team conducted its own CRISPR experiment on human embryos carrying a gene mutation linked to inherited blindness. The researchers hoped embryos would repair the faulty gene using a healthy copy as a template. While some embryos succeeded, many experienced serious genetic damage. Some lost large sections of DNA, while others lost entire chromosomes. "It had absolutely catastrophic consequences," Dr Egli said. The findings strengthened concerns that embryo gene editing was too risky for practical use. Base editing produces more accurate results To overcome these problems, scientists turned to base editing, a technique developed in 2016 by Harvard geneticist David Liu and colleagues. Rather than cutting DNA, base editing creates a small nick in one DNA strand and guides the cell to correct the mutation. The method has already shown promise. Last year, doctors used customised base-editing molecules to cure a baby with a potentially fatal genetic disorder. Dr Egli's team decided to test the technology on human embryos. Researchers successfully edited two important genes The scientists focused on two genes. One gene, PCSK9, is linked to levels of LDL cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. The second gene, HBG, plays a role in foetal haemoglobin production. Using donated fertilised eggs and two-cell embryos, the researchers introduced base-editing molecules and successfully altered both genes. In some embryos, they were able to edit both genes at the same time. Unlike earlier CRISPR experiments, the researchers did not observe major DNA damage. Challenges remain before clinical use Although the results were encouraging, the process was not perfect. In some cases, the editing molecules failed to reach their target. As a result, some cells in the same embryo were edited while others remained unchanged. This created so-called "mosaic" embryos, containing different genetic versions of the same gene. Such differences could potentially cause medical problems if the embryos developed into babies. Dr Paula Amato, a fertility specialist at Oregon Health Science University who was not involved in the study, described the results as promising but said further review would be necessary. Bioethicist Ana Iltis of Wake Forest University warned that some harmful effects might not become apparent until after birth. Potential benefits for IVF patients Nathan Treff, chief clinical officer at Nucleus Genomics and a co-author of the study, said the technology could eventually help IVF patients. The method may allow doctors to repair disease-causing mutations in embryos that would otherwise be discarded. "There is still work to do before getting to that point, but this research moves us closer," he said. Nucleus Genomics will help support future stages of the research because US federal funding does not cover studies involving human embryos. Future research will focus on reducing mosaicism and testing the technology on more developed embryos containing around 100 cells. Critics argue that predictions about complex traits such as intelligence remain unreliable and have accused the company of promoting a modern form of eugenics. The company rejects those claims. A spokesperson said the company sees itself as helping bring advanced genetic technologies into future medical care. Experts warn of ethical and safety risks Some scientists remain concerned about the long-term implications of editing human embryos. Geneticist Fyodor Urnov of the University of California, Berkeley, said the results were scientifically impressive but argued that existing IVF screening methods are already safe and effective. He questioned whether it was worth introducing a technology that still carries significant uncertainties. Urnov also warned that the research could eventually be used by people seeking to enhance traits rather than prevent disease. "What they are really doing is providing the 'baby improvers' with a how-to manual," he said. Social media usage by urban youth is of an average of 97.9 minutes per day, according to a joint report by VTION and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). While, the age cohort of 18-24 years among the urban youth averages more than 120 minutes or 2 hours per day on social media platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram, etc. The digital consumption landscape reflects sharp demographic variations across platforms, with distinct age groups and genders driving different engagement metrics, acknowledged the report. Urban people aged 35+ spend 77 mins every day on entertainment portals While the youngest cohort commands social platforms, older consumers aged 35 and above anchor the entertainment sector, spending an average of 77.2 minutes per day. Girls spend more time than boys on Blinkit, Amazon, etc The report revealed a pronounced gender difference in time investment. Female users spend more time in e-commerce and quick commerce platforms compared to their male counterparts, showing 47% more engagement within the 18-24 age bracket. The report also showed that the female engagement premium is consistent across various digital spaces. The 25-34 female cohort in Mega Cities averages 35.2 minutes per day in e-commerce and quick commerce platforms, whereas males in the same demographic average 24.8 minutes per day, translating to 42 per cent more engagement. 57% of Blinkit customers are girls Blinkit registering a 57% female audience, and e-commerce applications Meesho and Myntra recording 61% and 54% female audiences, respectively.
